What to Expect

The Ishigaki Stalactite Cave was formed approximately 200,000 years ago and stretches 3.2 km in total. About 660 meters of the cave have been developed into a tourist area, featuring audio guides and guided tours for visitors. This cave was once submerged under the sea before re-emerging, allowing visitors to observe fossils of marine life such as mantis shrimp, branching corals, and table corals. The unique coral stalactite cave, shaped over 200,000 years, radiates an ethereal glow—corals, as living organisms, have preserved the cave's present appearance through their enduring existence over millennia. The delicate, towering stalactites resemble a forest of trees, earning them the name "stalactite forest." Here, the stalactites showcase nature's ever-changing beauty—vast like a forest, aloof like an immortal, and adorable like Totoro—leaving visitors in awe.

Actually, there are three limestone caves on Ishigaki Island, and this one is the larger and most enchanting among them.
