What to Expect

Umeda's traditional Japanese "popular theater" performances cover the following traditional Japanese theater forms: Kabuki is one of Japan's famous traditional theaters. It originated in Kyoto in the early 17th century and gradually spread to Edo (now Tokyo) and other places. The performance combines dance, drama and music, and is based on historical events and moral conflicts between interpersonal relationships. All roles are played by men, and the men who play female roles are called "onnagata". In Umeda, visitors may have the opportunity to see Kabuki performances at local theaters or cultural centers. Noh is the oldest surviving Japanese theater form that combines dance, music and drama elements. During the performance, the actors wear masks to convey specific emotions and story content. Noh is often performed together with Kyogen, a lighter and more humorous form of drama, as a link between the acts of Noh. The Umeda area may also have dedicated performances of Noh and Kyogen. Bunraku, or Japanese puppet theater, is one of the most complex performing arts in the world. Three puppeteers work together to manipulate a puppet, and through delicate manipulation and tacit cooperation, they show lifelike movements and expressions. In Umeda, visitors can enjoy Bunraku performances in specific theaters or cultural centers.
